Recap: Saint Louis FC vs Tulsa Roughnecks FC
With a dominant 5-2 win over Tulsa on Saturday, our Sooner State success carries on. After the mid-week Open Cup game, which saw a largely changed side, we saw a lineup that looked much like Schilly’s preferred starters. So it was with a good deal of confidence that we took on the abysmal Roughnecks, but it wasn’t a game without a few moments of trepidation.
Despite taking the lead early on a Herrera goal in the 10th minute, and then having the man advantage after Davaron was sent off with a straight red in the 17th, Tulsa managed to score in the 29th and 37th to go into the half--leading us 2-1. At that point a slight sense of dread, bordering on personal panic, started to creep in.
However, in the second half Saint Louis FC took complete control of the game as we watched Herrera add three more goals to his earlier tally. A late goal from Musa meant that we walked out of Tulsa with 5 goals and, more importantly, 3 points.
A game like this is difficult to take much away from. Tulsa are just awful, and after they went down a man they were even worse. But the main take away has to be Herrera’s 4 goals. He seems to finally be firing on all cylinders and looks ready to tear up the rest of the league. Most important is that it seems the rest of our boys have confidence in him.
In days past, our heads may have dropped after giving up the lead. The lack of attacking options meant that it was nearly impossible to catch anyone. But Herrera's attacking prowess seems to give us the confidence to climb back and finish off opponents.
It is that kind of belief that may carry us a long way. -TR
